Happening in July

Witness will continue to collect for Heifer International during July. We are hoping to purchase something significant, though even the purchase of hives of bees or flocks of chicks or ducks can make a huge difference in the life of a family and then lives within a community. Please indicate on the memo line of your contributions any funds you would like directed toward this ministry.

Here's some history to hold close to our hearts as Brethren....

Dan West of Church of the Brethren (Preble County, Ohio!) started Heifer Project, now Heifer International, 82 years ago. He had served as a Conscientious Objector during WWI and had  worked with the Emergency Peace Campaign before working to feed refugees in Spain during Spanish Civil War. It was there the idea for Heifer Project emerged.

According to Church of the Brethren Network, an unofficial Church of the Brethren site, West's thoughts on hunger were as follows. He had observed "as fast as you give milk to these children they drink it and it is gone" . . . . Why not bring cows to Spain and produce the milk here? Why not give each cow to a family with the stipulation that its offspring must be given to another family who would, in turn, give a calf to yet another family?"  (https://www.cob-net.org/hpi.htm)

Those early years of war & hunger associated with war at the start of the 20th Century are not unlike the war-fraught years of the early 21st Century where we see unrest on every continent. With life's seemingly inevitable cycles of strife then comparative peace, it's no surprise that Heifer Project's 82nd anniversary (in terms of years) coincides with 82 years since D-Day.

May we at Beavercreek Church of the Brethren, a congregation so close to West's home in Ohio, continue to do what we can to promote peace, self reliance, and community.  May we do what we can to in West's words give "not a cup but a cow."
